NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image of fires and smoke occurring in Western Australia's Gascoyne

Published January 17, 2012

NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image of fires and smoke occurring in Western Australia's Gascoyne region. The fires forced the closure of the Kennedy Range National Park during the week of January 17, 2012. Western Australia's Gascoyne region has 373 miles (600 kilometers) of coastline along the Southern Indian Ocean and includes the local government areas of Carnarvon, Exmouth, Shark Bay and Upper Gascoyne. NASA's Aqua satellite picked up heat signatures from fires in Gascoyne on January 16, 2012 at 05:35 UTC (12:05 a.m. EST) using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard the satellite. Fires appear in red on this image. Wildfires have been burning in the region since the week of January 3, and now Gascoyne's Kennedy Range National Park has closed because of them. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, although the North West Coastal Highway has re-opened after being closed the week of January 13, about 50 firefighters continue to battle fires located north of Carnarvon. More than 1,158 square miles (300,000 hectares) have burned from this fire. Last week, showers from Tropical Cyclone Heidi helped put out parts of the fire, but there are no tropical cyclones in the vicinity to assist firefighters this week.
